January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, so here at Mountain Medical Center, we would like to share a few facts about cervical cancer with you.

  • More than 12,000 women in the US are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, and more than 4,000 women will die from it.
  • Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common type of cancer for women, but the good news is that it's also one of the most preventable types because of how slowly it develops.
  • The Pap Test detects cervical abnormalities and allows for early treatment. Women who have not had a Pap test in the past 3-5 years are at the highest risk for having abnormal cervical cell changes that can progress to cervical cancer.
  • Half of the women diagnosed with this disease are between 35-55 years old, but 20% are in women over 65, so it's important to continue cervical cancer screening until at least the age of 70.

Under the new Affordable Care Act regulations, the list of covered preventative services for women has been greatly expanded and most likely includes 100% coverage of a Pap test at your annual well woman exam. Call your health plan today to verify coverage!
